I have installed the new android (ics) on my phone, and it does not let me
keep contacts on the phone.
only synced with google account or exchange
i do not want my contacts saved on gmail. the only other option is using an
exchange server.
if i understand correctly, this means mapi server.

I think you should revisit your assumption... As far as I know, Android
doesn't force you to sync your contacts to Goo

Why not to use Zimbra? It has open source edition and with z-push you can
synchronize it with mobile.
