If so, IMAP::Client for perl works pretty well (though there are occasional
bugs :) ).
I can give you a perl script I use for handling incoming requests from users
(via email) and places them into a database.

I use Courier IMAP and used to have strange annoyances accessing it from
Mozilla Thunderbird (on both Windows and Linux) until someone told me to
limit the number of concurrent connection in the cach

How about an imap proxy? SpamAssasign has such a feature, IIRC.
This means that you Pine will connect to an IMAP server in localhost
which will then query the remote IMAP server.

Currently I work with curior imap server which work quiet nice.
in the last few days after I installed the new version on new Mandrake 9 I
started absorb strange behaviors.

the file locking issues yourself in order to get dot-locking
