Is there a device (tape, disk, writable CD) with about 0.5-1Gb capacity,
which
works off a parallel port,
works under Linux, doesn't require proprietary software, isn't a pain to
install and does
Check the parallel section in the kernel - I know that Shuttle is
supported is most of the hardware Parallel->IDE equipment is with
Shuttle Chip.
