those modems are not supported because of several reasons :
- Hardware vendors are VERY reluctant to provide the specifications
- Each and every such software modem uses some UNIQUE protocol

Look for PC-Tel chipset based PCI modems - these are hardware modems and
all you need to do in order to use it - is to use the command setserial,
and presto - you're ready :)

I'm looking for a PCI software modem that I can buy in israel and that is
supported under linux but not kernel version specific ( i.e.
it will not stop me from upgrading kernels)

Goto the linmodems web site: http://linmodems.org - and download the
Lucent driver..
Read the instructions, install and use it - it works perfectly well here
