OK ppl.
After 12 hours of non-stop work I finally did it. I managed to install
Debian "woody" on Alpha XL 266. Yuppy :_)
The procedure (for archives) is this:
1. Since I have no SRM or AlphaBIOS (only ARC) I had to use MILO.
MILO is no longer in development so "officially"
tion an 266 Mhz more than beats a 1 GHz Intel.
On some benchmarks I've seen, only an Irix MIPS could beat a comparable Alpha
on intensive floating point calculation application (Ram and cache size almost the
same).

I had this kind of Alpha exactly with OSF1 (or DEC UNIX, or Tru64, or
whatever you call it) as my personal workstation. I have had many an Alpha

Hi!
Well, thanks for all your replies. I have found out
that my favorite linux distro Debian supports Alpha XL and I am now d/l netinst.
I have also managed to find updated firmware that supposed to resolve some
issues with Linux install.
I will post an update whether I succeed or
not.

Anyway, enjoy playing.

The only other bit that I have heard regarding Linux on an alpha is
that you don't use Lilo but milo. Not sure about it.
