Gnus (which I use now) can read BABYL as well as other formats and its
as good as handling attachment as other mail readers.

Put this in your .gnus or even in .emacs:
(define-coding-system-alias 'windows-1255 'iso-8859-8)
You should notice that w1255 is not exactly 8859-8 you should also see
if you want to change gnus-article-dumbquotes-map.
