Try to upgrade ifplugd. They had few bugs back then (although I expreianced them using RTL8139), and it might be the problem. Ifplugd is supposed to detect disconnection, adn then bring the if down. If it detects it by mistake, it will try to bring down the interface, to detect it is connected (
