Thet say that better late than never:
On MS-windows, ImageJ, a Java program developed at NIH, might be
a better bet than ImagewMagick.
The program, which mimics the functionality of the Mac program
image, can be freely downloaded for either windows or linux from
their site.

After digging the mailing list archives of ImageMagick, I concluded that
ImageMagick is most probably a graphic libraries umbrella, i.e. it uses
existing image manipulation libraries, and let you work against them
