What CPU (and other hardware) do you have? Modern and fast IDE disks, with their (comparatively) primitive controller, cause high CPU load. I'm with a 1.7 GHz Celeron on an Intel motherboard. 256MB of RAM, almost never swapping. A rather new hard disk. But even if the IDE controller is a burden
