Yesterday my linux hang so that I had to reset it, then fsck failed
and hang and then the partiotion table got broken :-(. It seems that
there is a physical problem with the drive, it's giving "short read
error"s. Couldn't find any better area to fail than around the boot
record of the second par

If you have a WINS server on your network just enter "wins server =

in smb.conf
In any case there are several parameters you can set up to propogate your
computer's nebios name
"master browser = yes" is one of them (if i recall right).

One trick I use when a console locks is to log in via the network
and just run chvt. On Slackware, for example, X runs on VT2,
and a spare console on VT6. Usually I only need to 'chvt 6; sleep
5; chvt 2' and I regain control. (Only 'chvt 6' is needed, but why
not change it back?)

Actually, "$$" is TeX for "start an equation on a seperate line", so it
won't work as you expect.
