Hi list.
I've just found the problem with my ISDN connection - my Fritz! card is
faulty.
Its pitty that I had to install Win2k to find that out (can't they
have normal error reporting in hisax ?), but now I'm back to full speed
(that is 256kbps :-), and thanks to all the people who tried to help
Hello, everybody
Sorry if I'm not going to be _very_ specific but it's just too darn late
. :P
Well, after fiddling around with strace and the such I reached to the
conclusion that the locale implementation in the glibc 2.1 I got with my
slackware7.0 is broken. So, I decided to compile glibc 2.
Dear Yotam,
Well - it really depends on the purpose of the machine - of course basing
servers, or just machines with critical data on a "bleeding edge" kernel
is problematic at best, but on a development system, or even a home
system - getting the latest 'stable' release would probably be a good
Hello Yotam
Well, he could've asked two types of questions, I think each of us thought
about another question:
1. 'should I upgrade from 2.2.x to 2.4.3'
2. 'should I upgrade from 2.4.2 to 2.4.3'.
Usually kernel 2.4.3 will contain less bugs than 2.4.2, and more new
features. especially after such
Hi Hetz
Thanks for trying to help, but I wrote I already have XFree86 4.0.3. I
didn't ask how to install the binary. I already did. I asked if it's
possible to have anti-aliased fonts using xfree86 4.0.3 binary only,
because in the howtos I read they tell to compile it.

Well,
Currently almost all the drivers in XFree got the renderer support (with the
exception of S3 Savage - a really shitty chipset)
Now - that doesn't mean it's hardware accelerated. If you have Matrox
G200/G400 - then yes, it's hardware accelerated. Also - NVidia 0.9.8 drivers
will have Ant

Now that you mention this: any idea of what is the overhead for
anti-aliasing?

Dear sir,
One should not subdued by the temptation of using a 'bleeding edge' kernel.
Risks are a burden. One should apply his judgment and determine
whether he wishes to jeopardize the integrity of his system with a dubious
kernel. It is very likely that no harm will be inflicted, but recommendi
I am using from today 2.4.3, last weeks have been using 2.4.0. I did not
find any problem with neighter one. Actually I feal great even with a 2.17

not realy, for a simple reason. unlike dial-up modem connections, which

Gentle people,
Although the 2.4 is labeled as stable, there were many critical bugs following
its release. I usually wait a while prior to upgrading to a new version.
2.4 is not entirely stable and may not become stable until 2.4.5.
In my opinion, you should wait a couple of weeks and then upgra
Hi Udi,
1. You have to set the right permissions. You have to look in the log files
about any permissions' errors or anything else that will help you.
2. in the /etc/smb.conf file look of there are any read-only in the sharing
directories configurations.

Hi People,
Over the last 2 months that I have moved from kernel 2.2.18 to 2.4 - I felt
that compiling C++ stuff (I compile c++ stuff a lot - daily) the speed has
been down by a half..
This machine has AMD K7 850 with 320MB RAM, so it's not the machine.
Now it seems there was a problem with t
Hi Oren,
Regarding the anti aliasing - you'll need XFree 4.0.3 - if you have Redhat,
then you can download the RPMS from the Redhat's ftp site from the wolverine
(Redhat 7.1 beta 2) directory. That is - if you're running Redhat 7 now. If
you're running Redhat 6.2, then download the SRPM's and
Hello!
I've tried a lot to make my xfree (qt and kde programs) support anti
aliasing. I've read several howtos, and I've done it all except of one
issue:
Compiling xfree with defining the freetype2 dir to /usr/local .
I'm using a binary XFree- Must I use the source and compile it myself if I

Hello Eran
Why not ? It's usually good to upgrade the kernel.
