You can run minicom to see if yar modem responding.
ya can check http://www.linux.org.il/isp.html for HowTo and lot of goody
dont forget to configure yar /etc/resolve.conf file for default domain
setting
and available name servers, primary and secondary.

a file called "core" with most of the info needed to know why it has

use microsoft's quickres,
then,
while windows is running under vmware,
just change the resolution (let's say from 640*480 to 800*600),
then, it'll be fine (no matter if u'll change it back).
