Doesn't seem to be supported in 5.0.1, but we should support it,

So I got it working by doing a partition hook which
included skiptask partition. Looking at other format.log's
was very helpfull. I also needed to add cryptsetup
and btrfs-tools to the install packages.

Using jessie as the base os to install stretch.
30-interface will setup /etc/network/interfaces with
something like eth0, and if you upgrade to stretch,
it will reboot and eth0 is now named something like
enp3s0f1.
This was with version 5.0.3, so hopefully it's
still current.

For anyone else hitting this, also worth noting that basefiles
generated on a system with messed up acls can have
bad acls built in to them and they will need to be
fixed / recreated in addition to putting a new tar in the
nfsroot.
Alternate way of getting new tar that I used:

Thomas, I've noticed the Xenial basefile you host
has the bad acls on the files in it:
http://fai-project.org/download/basefiles/XENIAL64.tar.xz
I verified that I can generate a Xenial basefile myself
on Stretch that works and does not have them.
I suggest fixing it. I haven't checked any of the
