Context: I'm not using FAI right now, but I am doing a fair amount of PXE
install-related stuff.
Could you chainload iPXE via grub? If you do, I suggest you use the newest
version you can-- I've had trouble with the version supplied with Ubuntu
20.04, for instance.

I can confirm that export http_proxy=http://host:port works with debootstrap
as I've been using this and have seen the resulting proxy logs :-)

I'm trying to get FAI working with Linux Kernel Virtual Machines. I had a go
myself using the FAI and syslinux docs, and could get the KVM to load a
kernel (once I'd set up tftp/pxelinux.cfg/default), but not mount the NFS
export. I was able to mount it manually from the initrd.img
kvm -bo
