Going back to standard 3.2.17~lenny1 fixed this.

use DHCP
on our mgmt network and static ip configuration for the "data network", we
switched
back to the default config plus the live patches.

FAI provide a
standard means for this? I added some lines to the copy_fai_files() function,
to put a hook script in the nfsroot's initramfs-tools, patch files into
the nfsroot and added 'patch' to /etc/fai/NFSROOT

copy of a fixed rules file prepared
for this class of machines, nothing generated dynamically. It contains:

klibc-utils backported from lenny. Do you have a chance to
test your system against an etch/fai3.1.8 server?
