She was a constant presence at Valley Pond. With help from the lifeguards, she
would enter the water and swim back and forth for quite a long time. I watched
her, marveling at her perseverance.

And...Sophie continued to teach at the Brandeis' Osher Life Long Learning
program (BOLLI), almost until she died. Her classes were always popular
because of her natural ability as a teacher, her insight and perspective. She
was much admired.

Sophie was a part of our unique cultural landscape.
For those of us in this neighborhood, we would pass as we walked these roads.
She made a daily trek, up until the end, regardless of weather…in the final
years, with her walker.
And, she was still driving!
