lily.scm and other problems.

I'm new to lilypond, I'm having some strange problems. I'm using 1.6.12, 1.8 won't compile for me. I had tried the FreeBSD port of 1.6 but that install did not work. So I started over with the tarball. I'm further along than the port got me. It appears to work, mostly. ly2dvi gives no error

I'm running FreeBSD 4.8. I had 1.6.12 almost working. It rendered music but couldn't handle beams, or much of anything less than a quarter note. stems and lines were missing or short as well. I thought I'd try 1.8. After a lot of hacking I finally got it to compile and install. lilypond run
