No. I thought I had tried it with after-line-breaking first without
success but maybe I made another mistake.
When I adjust my score's size with #(layout-set-staff-size N) and the
score has a tempo with a metronome mark, the metronome mark's stem gets
longer if the size is smaller, and shorter if the size is larger. There
should be examples attached at sizes 20 and 12 to show you.

I am not sure that I understand you correctly. Do you know that you can
align the lyrics to a voice? Then you don't have to specify the timing
in the lyrics at all (but in the notes of course):
