Did you try with
\override Beam #'positions = #'(4 . 4) (you can cange the values to see
what happends..)
You can find other samples in the snippet repository searching "Beaming"
or "autoBeaming" :)

fine, but I'm not able to go any further!
Using version 2.10.0, on a Windows 98 box...which has worked fine for me
