The font used is a typewriter font with very bad kerning.

Sure, at least if you know something about the Scheme language
and how it's used in LilyPond.
The example called stencil-hacking.ly in the "Regression Test" document
at www.lilypond.org shows how to add parentheses around a note head.
It shouldn't be so hard to modify it to give brackets instead (

Thanks. I've already tried that, but it isn't really robust enough - it
puts accidentals outside the brackets for example. It also doesn't take
account of the note/grace note spacing properly. I haven't really got
time to learn some Scheme, so I might take Han-Wen up on his offer.

Try "dpkg-reconfigure tetex-bin" and, maybe, reinstall those fonts.

The default settings in LilyPond include settings equivalent to

#(override-auto-beam-setting '(end 1 32 2 4) 3 8)
see the file scm/auto-beam.scm
This means that you have to revert these settings using:

OK, that makes sense. Beginner question: Is this terminology

And sorry to be such a dull reading the doc,

Hi Joe,
Thanks for taking the time
If you are going to be building the documentation on Gentoo (i.e. you
have "doc" in your USE variable) it is almost imperative that you use a
version of Guile newer than the latest stable -- use a CVS snapshot of
the development branch, and you get Han-Wen's garbage-collection

Since the problem I encountered involves using Ghostview, which I don't
think was intended in the native Windows distribution of LilyPond 2.6, I
don't think this qualifies as a LilyPond bug. If I'm wrong about that
assumption, please tell me; I'm new to this list and I welcome your
