i'm pretty sure i have seen this before, but i couldn't remember where my idea was something like your first proposal, maybe with lowercase letters x and o for mute and open! this results in c => *x32o1o* d => *xxo132* btw i'm surprised how Lilypond plays d-major (xxo123) thanks! Eluze --
