For Windows: I recommend using WinXP, because 98 can't run python well.
For editing I recommend jedit,(www.jedit.org) it has syntax highlighting
and a downloadable plugin for LilyPond that makes it easy to compile and
view scores. For learning I recommend using the Document Wizard of this
plugi

Do you have a graphical Interface? If yes, try using nedit or gedit/kwrite (if
