Problem getting syllables onto tied note across bar end

I am having a problem getting my lyrics to fit across a group of notes which contain a tie. Here's the smallest possible example: \version "2.16.2" melody = \relative c'' { \clef treble \key a \major \time 4/4 b8. b16 b16 cis8 a16~ a8. e16fis8 a16 ( a~ | a8 fis )
