Maybe this is a newbie question, but...
After upgrading to Sarge and LilyPond 2.4.0, I get errors on this
test.ly file:
melody = {c4 e g b}
\score {
\melody
}
The errors I get are:
$ lilypond test.ly
Also, read in the manual on how to use convert-ly.
