Roland's solution is fairly clumsy, since it hard codes the
position of the beam. It's better to change the default stem
lengths for beamed grace notes.
Andrew, you didn't say what LilyPond version you use. I assume
the latest stable version 2.2, which means that the syntax is not
exactly the same

I'm a pretty new user to Lilypond. I first started looking at it about
a month ago, and I'm still unfamiliar with tweaking.
I'm working on inputting some bagpipe music. A while ago I was able to
make a correction to Lilypond's sample file to display the correct
notes, and now I'd like to improve
