Using Lily 2.4.2 with cygwin it appears that \tieDotted is broken.
\slurDotted is working OK however and I've used this in it's place to get my
pdf.
Could some kind person have a quick look at \tieDotted under 2.5 to see that
it's going to be alright for the upcoming 2.6 release.

The suggestion
a2^\markup {"$\\!\\!$\\textbf{\\textcircled{\\small{1}}}"}
gives me just the circle, with no number on my 2.4.2 (cygwin) also, but if I
add $'s around the number, as below, it works OK.

program files but not, it appears, your manual. Regardless of that,
however, the solution
was embarrassingly simple. You've produced a nice, easy to install and use

I have 3 people here wishing to install and use Lily, but have a problem in
which version to give them. My Version 2.2.2 (thank you for the update from
2.2.0 Bert) still gives me the following error message:

Ending cygwin install
Any advice, please, on which other packages I should manually select.

Now finally I feel I have full control over lyrics placement and inter staff
spacing.
I sing tenor you see, so I look at this staff rather a lot.
