I think one of my problems is understanding where to put commands, and
how to turn
This is quite a learning curve! I have to use two voices in some bars,
so I end up needing to carry the two voices to wherever phrasing slurs
lead. Sometimes I have to put the same note in both voices and make
one stem transparent, so as to include all ties and slurs. Fiddly, but
manageable.

I have a tie in a phrasing slur. Unfortunately the tie crosses a new
time signature, so lilypond drops it. I put a slur instead, but the
slur crashes through the phrasing slur. I think I should be able to
flatten the slur, but my best guess,
