unfortunately it did not solve my problem.
It seems Lilypond generally does by itself what I need,
but is getting confused where it should not be...

is there a way to persuade partcombine in a case like:
\partcombine {{r4}{s4}}
to produce a vertically centered rest, not one in the upper half of the
staff?
