SMuFL has nothing much to do with preserving the Unicode standard. If you can get the Unicode consortium to participate in outlining SMuFL stuffs in its standard than it would be good, but an abstracted standard used by one or two applications is a bad idea especially for one text based like ours.

If you run lilypond -ddelete-intermediate-files --png $your-filename you will get a png file as a result. However I don't know how you can control its output size/resolution. If you run LilyPond and pass it the -dpreview option on the command line it will give you a nicely cropped pdf and png
