Hi All,
I am typesetting a number of SATB hymns and noticed that mine look quite ugly
because of not combining stems in the desired manner. The hymnals I have seen
combine most stems on the SA and TB parts except for:
* Notes less than 2 steps apart
* Notes of different durations
* Eighth or sixt

It is possible, but rather messy, AFAIK. Anyone know an easier way?
Here's some code to give you a start. Essentially you draw a coloured box
with \markup, experiment to get the right size, move it into the right
position, and place it in layer -1 to put it underneath everything else.
