I have come across several cases with non-melismatic ligatures in
renaissance polyphony.
Indeed, I am afraid that changing the default behaviour would break
several of my scores.

IMO, horizontal spacing in incipits should be completely
"turned off", i.e. uniform (and rather tight) spacing
regardless of note values, as seen in the renaissance
