That is a hard one because they are both accurate terms in their own right,
but they stem from different sources or contexts. I think maybe markup is a
false analogy and textscript is a bit more literal. Still, I am no expert
and I suspect both terms are equally accurate and descriptive, which i
\mark has evolved into a way to put text over a barline, but you cannot use
\markup to put text over a barline, only over a note.

What's the actual difference between \markup and \mark?
Historically, \mark was used for rehearsal marks, and the docs reflect
that. These days, however, \mark is used for things like fermatas on
bar lines, "DS. al Fine" right-aligned at the end of a piece, etc.
Is the "definition" of a \mark simp

What does option `lilypond -H' do? I shortly examined the source and googled
about it, but cannot figure out what does it mean.

Thinking about it even more, I realise that having a link to TextScript in
the programming reference somewhere under 7.4 Text markup instead of just
under 5.7.5 Text scripts to make up for the confusion in terminology that

I would like to point out in comparing these two examples:
\override Voice.TextScript #'padding = #1.2
c4 c8. c16 c4^\markup { \translate #(cons 1.75 0) "Fine" } \breathe
\bar "||"
and
\override Voice.TextScript #'padding = #1.2

\once \override Score.RehearsalMark

The score-override-auto-beam-setting function is included in LilyPond
by now, so there's no need to copy the Scheme code in the answer.
The first alternative in the answer cited above can be rewritten in
a slightly smoother
Just add
\once \override Score.RehearsalMark #'self-alignment-X = #right
Simple, isn't it? :-)

Thanks, 'cause even though I glibly talked about alignment, I did not know
how it could be done. Now I know.

I never considered using a Rehearsal Mark for text. I see now that it would

I think the thing I did not find intuitive is that something called

Exactly what feature is it you want to illustrate? the padding or the

By the way, why not use the \mark command to attach the Fine to the
