Is guile-config reliably installed for versions of guile
later than some number X? In that case, maybe you could
simply require version X or later...

`libtool --mode=clean rm -f ...' during `make clean',
or has there been any trouble with this feature recently?
Has it been tested in any way? A can't find any occurence of
`mode=clean' in the Libtool test suite.
