It looks like the aborted configure run I was seeing was due to an
update I made to configure.ac to try to get 'make dist' to actually
work. My update was missing a quote. Sorry about that.
The automake warning/error remains.

while using the current version 1.4.2 of libtool I encountered the
following problems:
On a Darwin 1.4 (MacOSX 10.0, bash) --
I had to --disable-shared for a complete build.
This is due to the extra convenience libraries on the final link command
line.
