post your grub.cfg, for a time only the part concerning the available kernels

This is what you have posted:
root:/etc# passwd root
Changing password for root
Enter the new password (minimum of 5 characters)
Please use a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers.
Bad password: too short.
Warning: weak password (enter it again to use it anyway).
passwd: passwor
you are doing df -h from chroot.
at this stage you cannot read the partition table.
df (and everything else) will work once you logged into lfs as your
primary system.

the line "passwd: password changed" says otherwise
you have changed your password.
there will be no visible indications of changing password.

By trial and error I have found that any action that takes more than one
SBU in LFS is better off with -j1.
BLFS packages are more agreeable with -j2 switch.
On my dual core machine only kernel compiles flawlessly with -j2 switch.
Binutils and compiled against them gcc and glibc were all faulty w

Have a closer look: /dev/sdaX in fstab and /dev/hdaX in error message
IDE and SCSI? Typo?
Cheerio.

Again, if trying to replicate the condition after the full
installation - only harmless warning will be issued.

k there is a need to go to lfs-dev since it is just a
matter of adding a switch to configure script, nothing fancy.

Hello all.
Ncurses configure script during the Temp tools stage (chapter 5.15)
gives an error, requesting to be complied against gpm. As gpm is
installed in BLFS, the key "--without-gpm" should be passed to the
configure script, in addition. All works well from there.
Cheers.
