I installed LFS-6.8 on a notebook HP Pavilion dv6215ea with i386 dual
core CPU. My situation at the moment is the following:

GRUB is not something to "remove". If one no longer wants GRUB, then
one simply overwrites it with something else.

I'm very happy because I just finished to install LFS-6.8 easily
following the very precise Book, with only a problem resolved thanks to
the help by Andrew Benton.
My host was Ubuntu 11.4 with Pentium Dual Core.
All is OK, but when I've booted the first time using Grub, I found only
"Linux
I just finished building my lfs 6.8 system, and registered as a new
lfs user. Just follow the rules for posting and you'll be surprised
how helpful the people on lfs-support can be. Hang in there; just
don't give up. It's worth the 'pain'
