Lazarus version was a three weeks old trunk, GTK2 under Debian with
CheckBoxes for boolean off. After updating to r55322 some moments ago,
doubleclick toggles booleans just fine.
Before updating, the GTK2 ComboBox Style for booleans looked like
csDropDownList. Now Style is changed to csDropDow

He probably had a very old Lazarus from the times when the OI displayed
boolean values as true/false, without a checkbox

Yes it is interpreted as 2 clicks.
FYI: you can change an unselected checkbox in OI by clicking the
actual box once.
