Highly recommend 1/8 cables be used for primary flight controls.
Less stretch and higher margin of safety.
1/8 is the minimum legal size that can be used for primary flight controls in
Canada and is probably a good rule.

I just went through the same thing. Like every one told me, I will tell
you, every plane will differ, but figure 1.5" cable movement in either
direction for a total of 3".
