prefer to have wing tanks with a small (say 3 gallon) header tank up
front, to try and avoid a similar major fire in a crash, should
something so unfortunate ever happen to me.

If you're installing an emergency dump valve, does the size of the header
tank matter? Seems to me it's the emergency dump mechanism that improves
safety more than the small size of the tank. I guess a 12 gallon tank will
take 4 times as long to dump as a 3 gallon tank, but how long is that?
