Can"t you have a shop weld it up and turn it down again like we do in auto engines? Is this a no-no on aircraft engines? Steve Bray Jackson Tennessee The crank is rusted to .09 and it would require cutting to 20/20 to make it work. According to William I can't use. >Steven Phillabaum >Auburn, A

Welding ads additional stresses to a crank. I've only seen one crank that had the journals built up in an aircraft engine (150 Franklin). It was cracked through #5 journal when I tore the engine down at 30 hours SMOH. No more than a Corvair crank costs, buy another crank. I expect William Wynn

Oscar I have a crank with one bad journal. I got it last night and haven't looked close but I think it was #5 or 6. If its unusable for six cyl you're welcome to it. Thats the way I got it, a freind gave to me because he couldn't use it, I'm coming to Houston this weekend. Hope springs eternal

I know of one instance where a built up crank broke and caused the destruction of a Jodel d11, C85 engine. Auto shops don't grind a nice stress relief radius. Ron Freiberger mail to rfreiberger at swfla.rr.com <- substitute an @ sign ;o)

Absolutely I wouldn't use a built up crank. The "Best Machine Shop" in town thinks I am being stupid for not using a 20/20 cut crank. He just does not know. Since my post of the bad crank I found 3 cars in east Georgia in a junk yard. When I called I was told I probably wouldn't want them becau

Don't know about the welding bit but they can metal spray the crank and regrind the journals. Have used this method on old farm tractor parts that are no longer available. Aircraft usage may be another matter altogether. Doug Rupert. > > >

I've welded several high stress items in the past, reground them and thrown them back in the furnace to re-do the heat treat process and never had a problem but then again these were not crankshafts. Doug Rupert. > >

Hey builders, Just an update on the building. Since the warm weather I glassed the bottom side of the Horizontal Sab.. But, I got my engine back from the machine shop. The crank is rusted to .09 and it would require cutting to 20/20 to make it work. According to William I can't use. Well back on

Are cranks available for the Corvair, or do you have to get whole engines to get parts? See N64KR at http://KR-Builder.org - Then click on the pics There is a time for building and a time for FLYING and the time for building has expired. Daniel R. Heath - Columbia, SC See you in Mt. Vernon
