I used flat headed countersunk pop rivets on the piano hinge on my cowling. I
could control the force on the rivets so that I didn't beat up the
fiberglass/epoxy that I worked so hard to form. They covered nicely with
filler so they are invisible.

No, I used recess rivets and counter sunk them. I did glass over the face of
the false spar just to protect and re-enforce the wood, which I would do
anyway. I put them in place and squeezed them with my vice grip. There is
such a thing as a rivet squeezer, but they are fairly expensive.
