I think Peter Johnson and Sid Wood make good points, orientation does matter
but in this case I believe the difference is insignificant. The spar is in
bending but as Peter pointed out the caps see very little bending hence very
little shear due to bending (sometimes referred to as horizontal s
ted spar. I recently did a

There are pictures of my laminated spars at http://www.krnet.org/krs/lhyder/
Eliminated 36 pieces of steel and 128 bolts as I remember. I selected 20'
lengths of vertical grain fir, looking for straightness of grain and an absence
of pitch pockets. I ripped the spar cap material 3/8" thick enabl
uilt it slightly over sized and dressed

They are several planes built with laminated spar. I recently did a
Cassutt with a laminated spar. Built it slightly over sized and dressed it
down to exactness on the planer.

I'm about to start laminating the timber to form my centre section
spars from pieces that are 19mm (3/4") thick. Is the orientation of
grain orientation does not matter.
Cheers.

I'm about to start laminating the timber to form my centre section
spars from pieces that are 19mm (3/4") thick. Is the orientation of
the laminations significant? I'm not sure why but all the laminated
timber beams I've seen have the lamination layer horizontal. I can do
this but in this case I
