Is there an easy way to identify the case, cylinders, and crank used in a VW to determine what size engine it really is?? I see the heads have a p/n.. Do the cylinders etc also have them identified? Also, what is the difference between the Type 1,2,3 and 4 cases? Thanks. A newbie to VW and KRs

The case is marked with a large serial number along one side of the lower part of the case, and yes there is a cross reference to tell you what it is. You can measure the cylinders to see what size they are. There are so many manufacturers that I would not know where they might put their serial n
