Is there an easy way to identify the case, cylinders,
and crank used in a VW to determine what size engine
it really is?? I see the heads have a p/n.. Do the
cylinders etc also have them identified?
Also, what is the difference between the Type 1,2,3
and 4 cases?

The case is marked with a large serial number along one side of the lower
part of the case, and yes there is a cross reference to tell you what it is.
You can measure the cylinders to see what size they are. There are so many
manufacturers that I would not know where they might put their serial
n
I think that the type 3 was used in the Squareback,
Station Wagon. It has a tab for mounting on the rear (car )

the differences are not always visable. The difference between some engines
is the throw of the crank. Steve at Great Plains has lots of information
and books to sell.
