Was this the #3 exhaust valve?
Seems I have experienced the same valve swallowing event I have
experienced twice but it was in a '65 VW Microbus and '65 VW Bug so I
was on the ground

Congrats on a safe landing. When you put the engine back together make sure
you use good valves. DO NOT use VW factory valves. Since I started
building VW engines in 1972, my personal preference has been Manley stainless
steel valves.

July 25th at about 8 am flight from John Day to Prineville, OR for an airport
day breakfast, midway across Waterman Flat at 7,500? I heard a loud bang and
moderate vibration from my VW 2180 cc engine. I had just passed a ranch
airstrip so at a reduced throttle setting did a 180 and headed back,
