Yes, they are required on any aircraft that can carry passengers. At least,
the single place used to be exempt. Maybe some do have internal antenna,
but mine has a hand held version of the antenna and one for installation in
the aircraft. Here is the visual on the one installed in the aircraft.

I replied to this post earlier today, but much like Larry's missing emails, it
didn't go through. My KR has comm, transponder, ELT, GPS, and PCAS antennas,
but none of them are mounted externally. Since wood and glass are essentially
transparent to RF, all the antennas can be mounted internall
If the plane is a 2 place, an ELT is required. You don't have to have an
external antenna, but you will get better transmission range with the external.
