Chris, clamps for holding gussets really are not needed. Most will stay in
place on their own. The ones that want to slide to the floor you can hold in
place with a piece of coat hanger wire bent into a "C". As for attaching your
gussets to the cross members first. As Ron stated it would work
Just a reminder guys, Mark Jones (I think) told us some time ago about using
pieces of PVC pipe cut into very short sections with one side slit to make a
very nice, inexpensive clamp. Very handy and helpful tip.

The large size spring clips (for holding paperwork together) also work well
if you don't have to clamp too far in from the edge of the work.
