Hi guys, I have a piece of 4130 steel plate and was wondering which way the grain runs. All I can see on it is the original printing. (It must have had a bit of surface rust on it at some stage which was removed with some emery cloth). I would assume that the grain runs parrallel to the printing

Dene You are correct. The grain of metal is marked by the manufacture by the way they print their name on the sheet. The grain runs parallel to the printing. This applies for steel, galvanized steel and aluminum. Brant Hollensbe bhollen...@mchsi.com DSM Ia. > I have a piece of 4130 steel

Hi Dene That's why the KRnet is so great. We all share the info we know and ask questions on the stuff we don't. All bends should be made perpendicular to the metal's grain. Otherwise the metal may crack during the bending process or at a later date as vibration or other stresses are applied
