The reason some aircraft go to 6 or 8 ply tires is due to landing speed and weight.
Remember that tire goes from 0 to landing speed instantly. The stress on the sidewalls can cause failure. Are you willing to distroy or damage your aircraft for a few pounds.

I just had a simular experience with my oil temp gauge. Flying along and
my oil temp went from 160 to zero. Shocked
me and started to check other gauges. Engine was running fine. All of a
sudden 170 oil temp. I have a sending unit
on order.
