I always advised my customers to get a valve job done with new stainless
valves even on a new car.
The issue is that OEM VW valves were made in two pieces, the head and stem
were electron beam welded and machined to final shape.

Stainless valves are nice, but I will bet that the problem was not the valve.

Congrats on a safe landing. When you put the engine back together make sure
you use good valves. DO NOT use VW factory valves. Since I started
building VW engines in 1972, my personal preference has been Manley stainless
steel valves.
