Yes you can obsolete the patches for the first solution.

Bug 18242 fixes what could be a critical bug in some conditions.
I have submitted 2 different solutions.
The bug has been raised recently by several people on bug 18185 but affects
all versions of Koha.
Please take a look ASAP and discuss on the bug report.
